Kehlani is back in the spotlight with her electrifying new single, “After Hours.”
The track samples Cordel “Scatta” Burrell’s iconic “Coolie Dance Rhythm,” made famous by Nina Sky‘s hit, “Move Ya Body.” However, Kehlani’s lyrics take a different turn, capturing the thrill of love on the dance floor amidst the pulsating beat.
In a conversation with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Kehlani expressed a desire for liberation through her art: “I aim to bring life and fun, to be enjoyed outdoors.”
Reflecting on the inspiration behind the song, Kehlani shared, “‘Move Ya Body’ by Nina Sky is one of my all-time favorites. I was surprised it hadn’t been sampled before, considering its infectious drums that get everyone moving.”
“After Hours” signifies Kehlani’s return to the solo spotlight since her 2022 album, “Blue Water Road.” She expressed a deliberate shift from past narratives, focusing on embracing joy and newfound freedom.
“I’ve detached from past stories or traumas,” she explained. “Now, I’m in a joyful place, ready to savor life’s moments.”
As the lead single from her upcoming album, “After Hours” promises a thrilling new chapter in Kehlani’s musical journey, setting the stage for what’s to come.
