Anna Wise, The Voice Behind Kendrick Lamar’s ‘TPAB’, Releases New Single “BitchSlut”

If you’re a Kendrick fan, Anna Wise has been a part of your musical repertoire at some point or another. Wise’s distinctive vocals have graced K Dot’s tracks since 2012’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (think “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe” and “Real”). The Berklee alum most recently took home a Grammy for “These Walls” from To Pimp A Butterfly and was featured on “untitled 05” and “untitled 03” from Kendrick’s latest drop, untitled unmastered.. Despite the accolades she’s received from her work with the Compton rapper, Wise is stepping out to establish her own career as the talented musician she is.

Wise dropped her newest song “BitchSlut” just in time for International Women’s Day. She simultaneously released the accompanying visuals for the track (she directed the video and recorded it all on an iPhone 6 by the way). The song is an intoxicating mix of pop and hip hop, with some staggered hi hats and a wavy synth that perfectly accompanies Wise’s delicate vocals. The video follows Wise, from her floating on her back in a pool to her relaxing in a bathtub as she sings along with the track. Ultimately, “BitchSlut” explores the double standards women in our society have to endure. It tackles the hypocrisy propped up by cultural misogyny that deems women as “bitches” if they ignore male attention but labels them as “sluts” if they respond to said attention. Wise perfectly sums this up on the chorus- “I know what you are/ Say no I’m a bitch/ Say yes I’m a slut”. Any woman who has dealt with street harassment knows the inherent truth behind these words.

“BitchSlut” is from Wise’s forthcoming EP though she hasn’t announced a potential release date yet. In an interview with SPIN, Wise said of the EP, “There is a theme, and the theme is “women.” Women are great. We’re f**king great, and I want to talk about us. And talk about myself, because I’m a woman. I guess it’s kind of selfish…”. Take a look at “BitchSlut” below and check back in with us for any updates on Wise’s EP.
