Year In Review: Songs That I Loved From 2011

Our newbie Slaughterhouse (@LiviSlaughter) graces us with of her list of notable songs for 2011. Check out what the young gun thought was hot this year.

“Otis” – Jay- Z x Kanye West x Otis Redding
I do not just love Otis, I am IN love with Otis. There is no wrong mood to listen to Otis, every mood is the right mood when this song comes on. I could not get enough of the track. From sampling Otis Redding’s Try A Little Tenderness, to verses that stay with you like, “I made “Jesus Walks” I’m never going to hell, Couture level flow, it’s never going on sale, Luxury rap, the Hermes of verses Sophisticated ignorance, write my curses in cursive” the song is timeless. Your children will be listening to this song long after you are gone.

“Thinking About You” – Frank Ocean
As a member of Odd Future, Frank Ocean has made a name for himself by being a stand out in the group, but not quite for the same reasons as Tyler, The Creator, or Jasper the Dolphin. He brings a grown man element to their music and Thinking about You shows that. This song was so different than anything anyone else had put out in 2011. His melodic flow in the beginning of the song quickly turns to vocals that send chills up my spine every time I listen to it. This song is constantly on repeat.

“Trust Issues” – Drake
Trust Issues is dark. It brings out a side of Drake that we very rarely see. Even though he got a lot of slack for being so emotional on this track it, he raised enough eyebrows for people to listen to it. At first I was not in love with the song but with time it grew on me and I could not stop listening to it. I cannot get sick of this song.

“My World” – Iggy Azalea
Very rarely do I run into new female rappers that I fall in love with. Iggy Azalea happens to be one that I cannot seem to get enough of lately. Her song “ My World” gives a new voice to females everywhere. The song makes me feel strong and powerful , and while she is not the most talented rappers out there, her sound is unforgettable.

“Rolling in the Deep” – Adele
Adele has a way of reaching the masses. Her lovely voice accompanied by her beautiful face were everywhere this year. No matter what music genre you found yourself listening to the most, there was no avoiding this divas ballad. Rolling In The Deep is sung so passionately that even if you aren’t sad about a love that you lost ,chances are she will make you feel like you have.

“N**gas In Paris” – Jay-Z x Kanye West
N**gas In Paris was the party anthem of 2011. If I was at a party, this was playing. If I was running on the treadmill, this was playing. If I was driving in the car, this was playing. The beat was had me addicted and I could not stop coming back for more. The chorus includes the catch phrase, “Ball so hard motherfuckers wanna find me. That shit cray.” Since the songs release it has since become one of the most over used lines in the music world. If you are on twitter, you have seen it. Facebook? Nah , you have seen it there too.

“Look at me Now” – Chris Brown x Lil Wayne x Busta Rhymes
Chris Brown is not known as a rapper, but instead for his soulful voice. In his song “Look at Me Now”, Brown shows how versatile he is as an artist. Just when you think the songs done, Busta Rhymes come on to the track with the hottest verse he has had in quite some time. Busta’s flow was so fast that it was hard to sing along, but we all tried anyway. Making it one of the most fun songs to listen to with friends and have a good time while doing it.

“Yonkers” – Tyler, The Creator
People love to be shocked. They love to be appalled and confused. Tyler made it cool to be a crazy ass motherfucker. While his lyrics give the listener the image of a schizophrenic teenager who hates popular pop stars, the visuals of the music video have induced screams and upheavals from parents all over the world. While people have interoperated his lyrics and video many different ways, one message is incredibly clear, Tyler, The Creator is here to stay.

“Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay” – Big Sean x Kanye West x Roscoe Dash
Yup, Big Sean gets two memorable tracks this year, and here’s why; he is contagious. Who can get the bed squeaks in the track out of their head? Who can deny the sex appeal of the song? The lyrics are so subtly hot and raunchy but tied to something so classically sexy , Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay. Your grandparents probably set the mood to Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay , and Big Sean brought that back . And we cannot thank him enough.

“Dance (A$$)” – Big Sean
Big Sean’s most memorable song yet, A$$ is the epitome of a great ‘good time’ song. With the unforgettable hook of the word ass repeated multiple times, how could it not get stuck in your head? The song appeals to practically everyone, especially since Big Sean samples from MC Hammers, “Hammer Time. “ Something for you and your momma too!

“The Party, and the After Party” – The Weeknd
The Weekend has this gift of painting pictures with his lyrics. I could lay in bed for hours with this song on repeat and feel a little bit differently about it each time. His voice puts me in a trance like state and if you have not listened to this song yet , I recommend you do. It is definitely one you need to know.
