Teairra Mari: Creating A New Reality

“Wait. That’s her?”

Who knew such a large personality and boisterous voice could fit into such a tiny person? Regardless, Teairra’s tiny self caused quite the commotion at Laced Boston when she stopped by for a Meet and Greet, and had the fellas going groupie.  Most remember the Holland, Michigan native as the 17yr old princess of Roc-A-Fella records in 2005 who dropped the hit single “ Make Her Feel Good”.  That had girls around the country telling guys to step it up!  The album reached #5 on the Billboard Charts 200, and #2 on the Billboard R&B charts. We were ready and expecting to hear more from the Roc princess. Shortly after the album’s success, Teairra began recording her sophomore album “Second Round”.  However, the project came to a halt in November 2009 when Roc-A-Fella dropped Teairra on her prom night.

Although music was always a passion of hers it seemed like Teairra had a tough decision to make. She was torn between her dreams and reality. Dealing with pressure from the industry and her family after releasing her first EP at 15 yrs old, being the Roc princess by 17yrs old was tough for her.

“In all honesty, that was the problem, I wasn’t dealing with anything” she explains, “It was all just happening and in turn pulling me away from my family, especially my mother. I was having fun, I wasn’t focused.”

For someone who is so confident in their decisions and who they are as a person and an artist you would expect her to be a bit older. However it’s not age that makes you wiser it’s experience. At 24 years old Teairra has already spent a decade in the music industry, experiencing things that other artists in her age bracket could never be so resilient about. For so many pivotal moments in her career and her personal life including choosing to no longer have her mother as her manager, her constant fight with finding the right record label and being released from Roc-a-Fella. Her most pivotal moment in her life was Roc-A-Fella, the gift and the curse.

“I learned a lot from being signed and even more from being dropped from the label. It was a reality check each time.”

Soon after Teairra’s prom, it became time to grow up-at least if she wanted to continue chasing her dreams. Teairra signed with Violator in 2008 and began dropping a series of mix tapes that had the Internet buzzing. In addition to building her musical career back up, Teairra has given reality TV a try. She has been featured in a few episodes of VH1’S drama filled reality series “Love & Hip-Hop”. Considering reality TV is always a bit exaggerated and edited to fit what will get more ratings many of us were shocked when we heard Teairra would be joining the cast. Was this really the way Teairra wanted to make her musical comeback?

“Reality TV is a new platform I don’t see it affecting my music career at all. I haven’t misrepresented or disrespected myself in anyway. I have no problems with anyone and nothing to clear up, explain or hide.”
