The music world has lost another Icon today. Rest in Peace Phife Dawg.
Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to listen to certain types of music. In addition to my immediate family, I lived with my paternal grandparents. My grandmother was extremely religious and very distinctly old school in how she wanted us raised. I saw an actual switch more times than I’d like to admit, we were always told children needed to be seen but not heard, I could only watch certain things on tv, and sundays were reserved for gospel music. With all of those restrictions, I spent most time inside with my head buried in a book.
My grandparents moved back to NC in the early 90s, and a world opened up for all of us. My dad would listen to his Motown records. My mom was heavy into Luther, Freddie Jackson, and Teddy Pendegrass. And us kids were finally able to listen to hip hop. A Tribe Called Quest was a huge part of that – they were my favorite hip hop group. Masterful lyricists, sick beats and melodies that will be sampled for years to come. I’m pretty sure Bonita Applebum was on my very first “mixtape”.
