Funk Legend Leon Haywood, Sampled By Dre for “Nuthin’ But A ‘G’ Thang”, Passes Away At 74

The musical world took another heavy blow when it was announced that funk legend Leon Haywood died in his sleep late Wednesday night. Those who know their funk remember Haywood from his hit singles “I Want’a Do Something Freaky to You” and “It’s Got To Be Mellow” along with his musical prowess as a song writer and prolific blues musician. Those who don’t know funk but know their hip-hop and R&B will remember Haywood from Dr. Dre and Snoop’s sample of “I Want’a Do Something Freak to You” on “Nuthin’ But A ‘G’ Thang” and Aaliyah’s “I Gotcha Back”.

Haywood was 74 when he passed- there has yet to be a statement released on the official cause of death. He leaves behind an incredibly long and vast musical legacy that has influenced scores of artists and musicians. 90’s hip-hop alone would not have been the same without Haywood’s musicianship. Social media has been flooded with tributes and testaments to Haywood, his legacy and his importance to our culture. Artists like Dam-Funk and rapper 9th Wonder (who sampled Haywood for his track “Intro (Sweet Lord)” paid homage to the late legend on Twitter and Instagram.
