Once in a while, there’re collaborations that seem to be a written in the stars, a celestial alignment of musical talent, dedication and old fashioned hard work. New York born rapper Cavalier and L.A based producer Iman Omari have come together to give us one of those collaborations with their “LemOnade” EP. “LemOnade” sounds and feels more like an album or a mixtape than an EP- filled to the brim with excellent production and deep, thought provoking lyrics, “LemOnade” gives us a comprehensive view of who Cavalier and Iman Omari are as artists.
Most recently, the duo took us to the island paradise of Barbados for the visuals of their track “Heavy Crown”. The song is the perfect marriage of Omari’s laid back, west coast production style with Cav’s emotionally evocative lyrics. Vashni Korin lent her cinematic talents to the project and filmed the video, following Cavalier as he traverses the landscapes of Barbados to capture the everyday life of its inhabitants. You get a keen sense of what “Heavy Crown” is about without needing to intently listen to the lyrics- its clear that Cav is shouldering more than his own dreams or burdens. His crown is “heavy” because he’s taking on the dreams and burdens of his family and people as well. The music video expertly captures Cav’s delight and dilemma when it comes to his crown but still manages to imbue the visuals with a sense of tranquility and familiarity that we feel when we listen to Omari’s beat beneath the lyrics.
