FKA twigs Announces Fall North American Tour

FKA-twigs

Following the release of her debut album, LP1, FKA twigs has announced a US tour. If you’re not familiar with her music, no worries, there’s still time to fall in love and become her biggest fan.

FKA Twigs, whose stage name stands for Formerly Known As Twigs, is a true artist. This is apparent in all of her music and videos, many of which she has co-directed. Her falsetto vocals, booming basslines, various ominous sounds, and repetitive knocking have been dubbed “Alternative R&B,” but the 26 year-old singer and dancer doesn’t like this category. Twigs believes she was assigned this genre because of her mixed-race. In an interview with The Guardian, she explained, “When I first released music and no one knew what I looked like, I would read comments like: ‘I’ve never heard anything like this before, it’s not in a genre.’ And then my picture came out six months later, now she’s an R&B singer.”

Although Twigs says the repetitive loud noises make her music more like punk, it definitely has a sexy R&B-like quality. That’s probably because the songs have a very sexual theme. It can be subtle like in the slow delivery of her vocals and in the deep breaths as she sings, or obvious in lyrics like “If I trust you, we can do it with the lights on” from “Lights On.” An artist who is so in touch with her sexuality will most definitely produce great music. She finds the boundaries and pushes them. She won’t hold back.

Her skills have not gone unnoticed. In December 2013, twigs was nominated for BBC’s Sound of 2014, a list of 15 musicians who music critics and other industry figures believe to be the biggest new talent of the year. Listen to her music and you’ll hear that she has lived up to the hype.
