London based songstress Sonna Rele has one of those voices that’s as striking as it is riveting. Not only does Rele’s vocals give us goosebumps, she uses her voice to pass on equally powerful messages. The live video for her track “Popular Lie” shows the singer taking on the “lie” that all of us sometimes live, a lie perpetuated by our culture’s fascination with social media and consumption of material items.
Sonna Rele reminds us in “Popular Lie” that sometimes “everything’s make believe” when it comes to what we see on t.v and social media. The live rendering of the song is simplified from the original, with just an accompanying guitar and layers of Rele’s intricate vocal harmonies. The spareness of the music video draws attention to the lyrics that surround Rele as she sings into the camera. This ensures that the importance of the message of “Popular Lie” is received in a full, visual dose. Rele wants to make sure that what we remember that all of the glitz and the glamour are illusions that sometimes cloud a cold reality.
