It’s Ladies Night On #KBXSelect Vol. 13

#KBXSelect vol 13

I’ve been thinking a lot this week (as I often do) about how difficult it can be to move in this world as a woman. Every other day you turn around, there is some disrespectful meme or some hotep prophet telling women how they should dress, speak, who they should or shouldn’t date, how they should do their hair, what their TV viewing preferences say about them… that shit is exhausting to just keep up with.

One thing I’ve noticed as a result of this backlash is that more and more women are loudly and proudly loving themselves, supporting each other, and being unapologetic in their actions and words. It’s a trend that I am hoping will seep more into the music industry, where these inequities are deep rooted and accepted in the general culture.

I got a taste of that at this month’s #WorkoutKBX. Our featured DJ’s were all women and they brought the house down. Lady Spindrift, Guru Sanaal, Slick Vick, Hershe, Shasha, and Candy Raine kept the crowd going all night. There was scratching, 90s throwbacks, beat boxing, Diddy-style hype-(wo)maning and I was here for all of it. Respect to all of them for owning their sets.

On that note, there are a few artists of the fairer sex that I would like you all to check out this week. Nao gives us funky r&B vibes with “Fool to Love”, Sammus continues to voice the plight of the adult woman who doesn’t feel like she is adult-ing right with “Mighty Morphing”, PJ vibes out on “Oh Yeah”, and Moxie Raia pairs with Wyclef Jean on the folksy soul ballad “Follow Me”.

The fellas show up this week as well. Daytona flows over a sample of Toto’s “Africa” with “Because Liquor & Drugs“. Locals Akrobatik and M-Dot pair with LX-Beats on “Migrate”, and Jesse Boykins III is forever the hopeless romantic on “Losing You”.

Did you join us for this month’s Workout? Were you not entertained??? Are there some female artists you would like us to take a look at? Please share with us on all social media platforms using #KBXSelect.
