Angie Martinez Leaves Hot 97; Joins Crosstown Rival Power 105

Angie Martinez shocked the Hip Hop world when she announced her Hot 97 resignation through her Instagram. The radio vet who started with Hot as a teenager is headed to Power 105 to take over afternoons for the Clear Channel station starting in July. During this morning’s edition of The Breakfast Club Charlamagne, Angela Yee and DJ Envy confirmed the move. Shortly after her announcement Hot 97’s rival station Power 105 retweeted the announcement with an smiley face which set off speculation on her future. In addition Angie will be on the air for afternoons for Miami’s 103.5 as well.

Known as “The Voice of New York,” Martinez has had landmark interviews with artists like Tupac, Nas, Jay Z, Kanye West and more. In addition to her on-air time at Hot, Martinez took a swing at rapping releasing two studio albums in the early 2000s, “Up Close and Personal” (2001) and “Animal House” (2002). The highlight of her rap career could be counted as her apperance on the Lil Kim’s hit “Ladies Night” featuring Missy Elliott, Da Brat and the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes.

Angie expressed her thoughts on leaving her long time position on her Instagram account on 6/18.

“Today I resigned from HOT97. I am grateful to the Emmis family for my time with the company and the immeasurable way that it has shaped my life. We made history together in so many ways and I will cherish those memories and my friendships forever. This was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways. Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly….the listeners… for an unimaginable journey.
