Vince Staples Steps Into The Spotlight

VINCESTAPLES

KBX’s Bout To Blow series is focused on the artist that Killer Crew believes will have a break out year in 2015. These are the cats that are one hit away from jumping out of the blogosphere to your playlist of your local Hot or Power or hitting the main stage at your favorite music festival. The series continues with Californian Vince Staples.

Vince Staples first came to my attention as an affiliate of Odd Future circa 2010 by popping up on their first wave of self released free projects. Near the end of 2011 he released a mixtape titled “Shyne Coldchain Vol. 1”. Vince followed up that effort the next year with a collaborative project “Winter In Prague” in association with producer Michael Uzowuru. The next year, Vince Staples released another collaborative LP with Mac Miller (using his production alias Larry Fisherman), “Stolen Youth” but he really raised eyebrows which his guest verses on Earl Sweatshirt’s debut LP “Doris”. Vince’s presence, ferocious delivery and bars on “Burgundy”, “Hive” & “Centurion” were a portent of great things to come in the near future.

Vince Staples’ star turn can more than likely be attributed to his appearance on Common’s lead single “Kingdom” from his 2014 LP “Nobody’s Smiling”. Shortly afterwards his debut EP “Hell Can Wait” was released on Def Jam in addition to his mixtape “Shyne Coldchain Vol. 2” and another notable quest verse on Dilated Peoples’ “Directors Of Photography” LP (“The Dark Room”). Vince Staples has put in a significant amount of work over the past 5 years and it’s all finally going to pay off when his major label full length debut “Summertime” is released in 2015. No more sleeping on this cat will be permitted as he’s Bout To Blow like detonated plastique…
